Business Software, Web Applications and Desktop Software compared

July 18th, 2009 by Valheru75 | No Comments | Filed in E-Commerce

It has been some time that an argument has been doing rounds about the replacement of desktop application by web applications in the business software category. Although, web applications are more versatile and flexible, desktop software and applications are not easily replaced considering the issues of security and replacement of legacy systems that have been in place for some time now. The shift if it ever happens is not only a technical issue but also a marketing and business issue. A lot of information is available on a website that discusses these issues under various heads and articles.

A desktop application is localized on computer or a local area network where it is deployed whereas a web application is delivered to users across the globe using a web server connecting through the internet. Usage of a web browser as a client is finding more and more acceptance today and is being used in many applications and off the shelf products to deliver better GUI’s. This has led to the popularity of web applications. It is very important to understand the delivery systems on the internet to find suitability of converting a desktop application into a web application. Applications integrating search engine optimization techniques have become more popular in businesses that are marketing or sales oriented, while a manufacturing unit may find it less appealing to convert the existing application into a web application.

A few points come to light in comparing a desktop application and a web application.

Accessibility: A desktop application is accessible only on a local computer, whereas a web application is available anywhere across the globe.

Maintenance & Upgrades: Web application need less or no maintenance since they are installed only once on the web server, whereas desktop applications need to be deployed individually on each computer. Upgrades and other compatibility issues are mostly taken care of by the webmasters of the hosting company unlike desktop applications. The maintenance of a web application is of prime importance, since the business puts all its eggs into a single basket, uptime is not only necessary but crucial to the application.

Security: Working online has its own set of risks like hacking and virus threats. The risk is higher compared to a desktop computer, since a malfunction of the desktop can result in loss of partial data. The crash of a web server can result in consequences beyond the control of a business.

Cost: Running a web application involves recurring cost of web space and bandwidth use, whereas, the use of desktop has a one time cost and has been known to cheaper over a period of time.

Connectivity: The reliability of web applications is based on connectivity, although they can be used from anywhere across the world, connectivity speeds and bandwidth regulation may render it useless in some areas. Failure of internet connection from the business end or the web server end can cause unwarranted delays. Critical applications may suffer as a result of these interruptions in service.

Slower: Web application in comparison to desktop application run slower due to transfer of data through the internet. The speed of connectivity and bandwidth usage may be major factors.

The popularity of web applications is only due to the accessibility despite their limited functionality.

Advantages of Charitable Trusts to Businesses

July 13th, 2009 by Valheru75 | No Comments | Filed in Financial Planning

Businesses can gain immensely from charitable trusts, though these trusts are nonprofit organizations that are set up for the benefit of some other party. That is the reason why most businesses are setting up charitable trusts for themselves. It is not too difficult to set up a charitable trust either. A minimum amount of $100,000 worth in assets is enough to be eligible to set up a charitable trust. In addition, there are several privileges that charitable trusts have.

The following is a list of these privileges:

- Charitable trusts will not cease to function even if they have not been able to fulfill their initial goals. These trusts have what is known as cy pres, a provision that allows charitable trusts to change their beneficiary options if they are not able to meet the first one.

- Charitable trusts can remain working perpetually, which is not the case with other organizations. Most establishments have a particular tenure after which they have to either renew licenses or cease to function, but charitable trusts can go on indefinitely if they so wanted.

- Charitable trusts are given permissions to establish themselves even if their beneficiary options do not seem to be quite concrete. Even if there is just a philanthropic concept, charitable trusts are given permissions to start.

Hence, it is very easy to start charitable trusts. That is what businesses do. The charitable trusts do fulfill the noble intention of serving some beneficiary, which could be an individual, a group of persons or an establishment. At the same time, the charitable trusts help the owners to manage their resources well.

The following is a list of benefits that the owners of charitable trusts are provided by the authorities:

- Charitable trust owners are exempted from a portion of their estates taxes. These taxes can even be waived off if the established charitable trust is large enough in its scope.

- Charitable trust owners are also benefited in terms of capital gains taxes. In this way, charitable trusts help to increase the overall income of the owner of the trust.

- In case of retirement or winding up of business, the charitable trust funds can be used as a sort of retirement benefit plan for the owner. The charitable trust will continue to work as long as there are funds in it. However, it will also pay for the expenses of the owner.

- Charitable trusts are very handy if there is a sudden demise of the owner of the assets. These trusts will then appoint a living trustee – or the living trustee could be appointed during the lifetime of the owner – and this living trustee will undertake the proper disbursement of the assets among the survivors. This happens if no will is made, and in many cases, even if there is a will, the living trustee can supersede the will in some points. An advantage of this arrangement is that the survivors do not have to wait for lengthy probate periods and nor do they have to pay heavy fees for legal procedures.

That is the reason why setting up a charitable trust is a worthwhile idea when the person is still alive. It will help to improve assets during life, and will help to properly disburse assets after death. Setting up a charitable trust is easier than setting up other organizations. However, since the rules differ from one place to another, it is necessary to look into state laws before planning to go ahead with the idea of setting up a charitable trust.

Should You Invest in 529 College Savings Plans?

July 13th, 2009 by Valheru75 | 1 Comment | Filed in Financial Planning

With the growing popularity of 529 College Savings Plans, also known as Qualified Tuition Programs, many parents are asking themselves whether they should go ahead with this investment program for their kids’ college education or not. A 529 College Savings Plan is a provision in the United States of America, started in 1996, which allows parents to invest in a monthly basis for their children’s future educational needs, especially when they are in college. It is advisable to start early with these investments. The earlier the investment is started, the smaller will be the sum of money required to be put into the fund each month.

The 529 College Savings Plan is applicable for as many as 8,000 US schools and colleges and 800 foreign institutions. That makes it one of the most wide-reaching plans for educational investment in the US. The advantage to parents here is that they can choose whichever school or college for their children – and also various foreign institutions – without worrying whether the plan will pay out for their expenses or not.

The 529 College Savings Plan is wonderfully designed to meet all the educational requirements of collegiate students, though the most intentional investment is of course for the college tuition fees. With college tuition fees touching a high of $20,000 per year, the plan is a boon to most parents, who can give their kids a better and longer college education. Also, the plan is adjusted for future inflation. This means, as the prices of the college fees will go up in future, the amount paid out by the plan will also increase. The plan can be bought at present rates, but when the student begins college education, it will pay out at the future inflated rates.

Apart from college tuition fees, 529 College Savings Plans can also be withdrawn to fund other college requirements such as food and lodging, books and education material and paying all kinds of utility bills. Though, there is a 10% tax levied for withdrawing this fund for non-educational purposes.

Speaking of taxes, the 529 College Savings Plans are free from all kinds of federal taxes, and even state taxes are not levied in most circumstances. If you are a grandparent making an investment for your grandchild through the 529 College Savings Plan, you are allowed to sign off this amount from your total estate. Also, generally, the amount paid for the 529 College Savings Plan is tax-deductible.

There are apparently no disadvantages of the 529 College Savings Plan, which has been carefully scrutinized by financial experts. Since it is a relatively recent plan, all the problems of the current economy are already taken into account, and the plan is almost error-free. As such, it is an exceedingly good idea to go ahead with such an investment for your child, as you cannot guarantee how you will be financially placed a decade later when your child’s college education will probably begin. Also, the sooner you begin, the better.
